Is Airport Duty-Free liquor actually cheaper in India?
Duty-Free removes the tax, but adds massive airport retail margins. Depending on the state you live in, the local liquor shop might actually be cheaper than the airport.
FAQs
Why is Duty-Free liquor supposed to be cheap?
Duty-Free shops are located in international transit zones, meaning goods sold there are exempt from national taxes and import duties. For imported alcohol, avoiding India's 150% basic customs duty represents a massive theoretical saving.
Is Duty Free always cheaper than local Indian shops?
Not always. While you save on taxes, airports charge retailers astronomical rent. The retailer absorbs the tax saving as profit margin. In low-tax areas like Gurgaon or Goa, domestic retail prices for certain brands can occasionally undercut Duty-Free.
What is the allowance for Duty-Free alcohol in India?
Passengers arriving in India from an international flight are permitted to bring in 2 litres of alcoholic liquor or wine duty-free as part of their baggage allowance.
